Mio Sushi recently closed in Bend after almost 20 years in business.
The Old Mill District decided not to renew its lease with the restaurant, according to Beau Eastes, the Old Mill District’s marketing director.
The restaurant has had low health inspection scores in recent years. Mio Sushi was among the county’s lowest scoring restaurants in 2017 and 2019 because of improper sanitation and food storage temperatures, according to previous reporting from The Bulletin.
The restaurant also received a low score last year after inspectors found employees and the owner didn’t have food handler cards or clean the space as often as necessary, per the Deschutes County Health Department.
Mio Sushi, a Portland-based regional chain, opened in Bend in 2008 at the Cascade Village Shopping Center but relocated to the Old Mill District in 2011. The restaurant was adjacent to Anthropologie and across from M’s Bakery.
“We’re thankful for what they brought, but excited for new possibilities there,” Eastes said. “It’s a cool location, centrally located on the ground floor.”
The restaurant removed its signage and covered its windows with blackout curtains, with no public notice of the closure. The space will transform into the Old Mill District’s SantaLand where families meet Santa, which typically opens the day after Thanksgiving, Eastes said.
